Switching from Synthesia: every video goes dark when the term ends
Updated Oct 15, 2026
Download your Synthesia videos before the billing period ends: after that you lose access to the account and every video in it. Avatars can't be exported, and interactive videos don't download as MP4. Purchases are non-refundable, and the terms ask for non-renewal notice at least 30 days before the term ends. None of Vidnoz, D-ID or HeyGen names a Synthesia importer; your slides and downloaded videos are what move.
The steps
- Step 1 · At least 30 days before the term ends · A missed renewal is not refunded
Check your renewal date
Plans renew automatically. The terms ask for non-renewal notice at least 30 days before the term ends; the help centre only says to cancel before the renewal date. Go by the 30 days.
source - Step 2 · not stated on its pages · Included on Starter, Creator and Enterprise
Download every video you want to keep
Download MP4 in 1080p, WAV audio, XLIFF scripts and SRT captions, or bulk-download selected videos as MP4. Videos with interactive elements can't be downloaded.

Rebuild your avatar at the new tool
Synthesia's terms say avatars cannot be exported. Vidnoz processes a custom Avatar Lite in about 10 minutes; D-ID creates a V3 Pro avatar within 24 hours.

Import your slides
Vidnoz imports PowerPoint files under 100MB; HeyGen converts PPT or PDF decks up to 50 slides at a time; D-ID has a PowerPoint Add-in.
source - Step 5 · Access runs to the end of the billing period · not stated on its pages

Synthesia doesn't keep a free archive of your work after you leave. Once your billing period ends, the account and every video in it close. Plan the move around that date. Everything below comes from Synthesia's own help centre, terms and pricing page, and from the destinations' pages, read Sep 30, 2026.
Download everything first
Synthesia's download article lets Starter, Creator and Enterprise users download each video as an MP4 in Full HD 1080p, the audio as WAV, the script as an XLIFF file and captions as SRT. You can bulk-download selected videos as MP4 files.
Two things don't come out. Videos with buttons or branching "cannot be downloaded". And the terms say "Avatars cannot be exported".
After cancelling, the billing article is blunt: "Once the billing period ends, you lose access to Synthesia and all videos in your account." Export first, because you won't be able to download afterwards.
Notice, refunds and cancelling
Synthesia's pages disagree on notice. The billing article says to cancel from Billing before your renewal date. The terms say either side must give notice of non-renewal "at least thirty (30) days before the end of a subscription term". We use the stricter reading: cancel at least 30 days before your renewal.
There are no refunds. The refund article says purchases "are non-cancelable and non-refundable, even if the subscription wasn't used". No early termination fee is named; you simply pay out the term. Unused video minutes don't roll over to the next period, per the pricing page.
To cancel on Starter or Creator, go to your profile > Account info > Billing > the three-dot menu > Cancel your subscription. Enterprise customers with a signed Order Form contact their account team. If you cancel by mistake, support can reverse it within 48 hours where possible.
What you can keep using
You own your videos. The terms also keep your licence to Synthesia's avatars and voices "after the term to the extent it has been incorporated in videos generated using the Services", as long as you keep to its rules. So a downloaded video stays usable, under the same licensing limits: stock avatars stay out of paid ads and TV broadcasting without permission.
Where to go
None of these three names a Synthesia importer. You bring downloaded MP4s, your PowerPoint files and a new recording for a custom avatar. See the full field on our AI avatar video ranking.
Vidnoz. Its PowerPoint import takes files under 100MB, and a custom Avatar Lite takes about 10 minutes to process from a 1-minute speech video. Starter costs $13.50 a month billed yearly, or $26.99 billed monthly for 450 credits. Prices from its pricing page, read Sep 27, 2026.
D-ID. You can add your own images, GIFs and video clips, and a V3 Pro avatar is created within 24 hours of submitting your footage. Commercial use starts on Pro, at $16 a month billed annually or $29 monthly; Lite is personal use only. Prices from its pricing page, read Sep 25, 2026.
HeyGen. Its PPT/PDF to Video tool takes up to 50 slides at a time. Avatar videos usually take about 10 minutes to generate per minute of video, per its processing article. Creator costs $29 a month, or $24 a month billed annually. Prices from its pricing page, read Sep 25, 2026.
Who should switch
Switching suits you if your videos are finished and you can download them in the time left. If you rely on interactive videos or SCORM packages inside Synthesia, rebuild those at the new tool before your access ends. Our methodology explains how we compare plans.
