Square Online review: $0 a month, but 3.3% + 30¢ online and no own domain

Updated Oct 1, 2026 · scored under rubric v1

Verdict

Square Online suits a seller who wants to start selling online for $0 a month and can live without their own domain. The catch is the higher 3.3% + 30¢ online rate on Square Free and no published way to use another processor.

Square Online comes with Square's plans. Square Free is $0 a month per location and charges 3.3% + 30¢ per online card sale, with no custom domain and no abandoned-cart emails. Square Plus, $49 a month per location, lowers the online rate to 2.9% + 30¢ and adds both. Square publishes no way to use another payment processor.

What it does well

  • Square Free costs $0 a month per location
  • Unlimited items, coupons and inventory tracking on every plan
  • Free SSL on every Square Online site
  • 30-day free trial on Plus and Premium

Where it falls short

  • No abandoned-cart emails on Square Free
  • No published way to use a processor other than Square

What you get on Square Free

Square says you can list unlimited items with photos, descriptions and variations, or import them from Square POS. Coupons are checked on all three plans, and inventory tracking works across locations and sales channels. Every site gets free SSL.

On a $50 online card sale, Square Free's fees come to about $1.95, against about $1.75 on Plus or Premium.

Catches and fine print

  • No own domain on Free. The plan comparison's "Custom domain connect" row is a dash under Square Free, so your store stays on a Square address until you pay for Plus.
  • No abandoned-cart emails on Free. The "Abandoned cart emails" row is checked only for Plus and Premium.
  • Square only. Its help centre says your site is "automatically set up with Square's payment processor". It lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay, Cash App Pay and Square Gift Cards as extra methods. We found no published way to use another processor, so there is no third-party fee to compare.
  • When Plus pays for itself. Plus lowers the online rate by 0.4 points. On rate alone, that covers the $49 fee once online card sales pass about $12,250 a month per location. Below that, Plus is worth it only for the domain, abandoned-cart emails and other features.
  • Per location. Each plan price is per location, so a second shop doubles the plan cost.
  • No wholesale tools mentioned. We found no B2B or wholesale selling features for Square Online.

Support

Square Premium lists "24/7 support" and 24/7 phone support. The plans page we read doesn't say what support Square Free and Plus include.

Who it suits

Square Online fits a seller, often one already using Square in person, who wants an online store for $0 a month and doesn't need their own web address yet. It also suits someone testing demand before paying for a plan.

Look elsewhere if you need your own domain without a $49 monthly plan, want to choose your own payment processor, or sell enough online that a 3.3% rate costs more than a paid plan elsewhere.
