Switching from LegalZoom: billing stops only when it has proof

Updated Oct 6, 2026

The short answer

LegalZoom's terms say that to leave it as registered agent you appoint a new agent and send LegalZoom written proof by your next billing date. Charges continue until that proof arrives. Subscriptions are refundable only within 30 days of the first purchase. InCorp helps with the forms and pays the state fee up to what you paid it; Bizee charges $99 plus the state fee.

Leaving LegalZoom as your registered agent is mostly paperwork, and LegalZoom's own terms set the order. It keeps billing until it has proof that another agent is on the state's record. Everything below comes from the companies' own pages, read Sep 25-30, 2026.

What LegalZoom's terms ask of you

LegalZoom's registered agent costs $249 a year, and its page says the service "auto-renews at the purchase rate each year until you cancel." You can cancel online through the My Account portal or by phone. Cancelling doesn't end the service by itself. The registered agent terms say you must appoint another agent, pay the fees for the change, and send LegalZoom "satisfactory written proof" by the next billing date. Until that proof arrives, "you will continue to incur charges".

LegalZoom publishes no fee of its own for leaving. If LegalZoom resigns as your agent instead, the same terms say any state resignation filing fee is yours. Its article on changing agents puts the state's filing fee at anywhere from zero to $50.

Refunds are narrow. Under the LZ Guarantee, subscriptions can be refunded within 30 days of the initial purchase, "After 30 days, we will no longer issue a refund for a subscription service." No prorated refund is described. So the date that matters is your renewal date.

What happens to your documents

LegalZoom uploads service of process and urgent mail to your cloud storage account. Download what you want to keep before you cancel. The terms warn you may have to pay "reasonable copy and shipping charges" for a copy on request, and that LegalZoom "may delete such Customer Data a minimum of 30 days after termination." Legal mail that reaches LegalZoom after you replace it is marked "Return to Sender" or destroyed. It isn't forwarded.

Where to move

Three companies from our registered agent ranking publish a way to take over from another agent. None has a guide that names LegalZoom. Prices from their pages, read Sep 25-30, 2026.

  • InCorp Services charges $129 a year. It gives "free help with Registered Agent Change forms," sends its address right away and filing instructions "within 1 business day." Its fees page says it pays the state's change fee "up to the amount You paid InCorp" for the agent service, and adds anything above that to your order. The agent page says it absorbs transfer fees "in most cases"; we use the fees page's capped reading.
  • Bizee sells a Change of Registered Agent filing for a $99 processing fee plus the state fee. After that its agent costs $149 a year, because its free first year comes only with its formation packages. Bizee's guide says most states process a change "within a few business days."
  • CorpNet lists "Change a Registered Agent" at $199 standard or $349 express, with its agent at $149 a year. Its change page says it will "cover any change of agent of fees", but the price list shows the $199 service, so we use that. Its processing times give 2-4 business days for agent changes, before the state's own time.

What carries over and what doesn't

Your company doesn't change, only the agent on the state's record. What you lose is LegalZoom's copy of your mail after the switch, anything not downloaded within 30 days of termination, and any renewal you pay for before the proof reaches it.

Who should stay: if you only just bought the service, the 30-day refund window may matter more than the move. Who should move: anyone facing a renewal who wants a lower yearly price. InCorp's $129 is $120 a year below LegalZoom's $249. See how we score agents in the methodology.
