Price
Big Cartel Gold is $0 for up to 5 products. Platinum is $15 a month or $144 a year for 50, and Diamond is $30 a month or $288 a year for 500.
Sellfy's own pages conflict on Starter. Its pricing page shows $29 billed monthly and $22 a month billed yearly. Its help centre price table says $39 a month or $348 a year. We use the help centre's figures, the worse reading for a buyer, as our flags record. On those figures, a year of Starter costs $204 more than a year of Big Cartel Platinum.
Sellfy Starter covers up to $10k in sales a year. Above that, Sellfy says it may charge a 2% overage fee on the extra revenue until you upgrade. Business is $79 a month, or $59 a month billed yearly, for up to $50k.
Neither company adds a transaction fee. Sellfy's pricing FAQ puts PayPal or Stripe at typically 2.9% + 30¢; Big Cartel's payments article quotes Stripe from 2.9% + 30¢. That is about $1.75 on a $50 sale on either.
Where they differ
- What is capped. Sellfy Starter has unlimited products but stops at $10k a year in sales. Big Cartel's plans stop at 5, 50 or 500 products; its pages we read don't mention a sales cap.
- What you can sell. Sellfy's Starter plan lists downloads, subscriptions and merch. The Big Cartel pages we read don't describe selling downloads or subscriptions, so check before you commit if that is your business.
- Free start. Big Cartel Gold is free with no credit card. Sellfy has a 14-day free trial, but checkout isn't enabled during it, so you can't take payments until you pay.
- Entry-plan tools. Sellfy Starter includes coupon codes, your own domain and free SSL, and its stock function limits quantities. Big Cartel Gold has none of discounts, inventory tracking or a custom domain; those start on Platinum.
- Abandoned carts. Sellfy adds cart abandonment on Business. Big Cartel keeps abandoned cart emails for Diamond, at $30 a month.
Who should pick which
Pick Big Cartel if you sell a small range of physical goods and want to start free, or want a custom domain and discounts for $15 a month.
Pick Sellfy if you sell downloads or subscriptions, have many products, and expect under $10k a year in sales. Budget for Business once you pass it.
