Switching from 1Password: an unencrypted export and passkeys left behind
Updated Oct 15, 2026
Export each 1Password account from the desktop app as 1PUX, which keeps attachments, or CSV, which keeps only Login and Password items. Both are unencrypted. Passkeys export only from the iOS and Android apps. Cancel the subscription: the plan runs to the end of the billing period, with no refund. Proton Pass imports 1PUX; Zoho Vault and RoboForm also publish 1Password paths.
The steps
- Step 1 · not stated on its pages · not stated on its pages
Check who can export
People who unlock 1Password with SSO can't export their data. In 1Password 7, some team vaults may lack the "Export items" permission for you.

Export each account as 1PUX
In the 1Password 8 desktop app, select File > Export, choose the account and pick 1PUX. CSV keeps only Login and Password items.

Move passkeys from a phone

Import into RoboForm

Or import into Zoho Vault
In Zoho Vault, go to Settings > Import Passwords and select your 1Password version. Zoho's pages disagree on 1PUX, so plan on CSV.

Or import into Proton Pass
Proton Pass's import tool has a 1Password guide and migrates from most major password managers.

Delete the export files
1Password export files are plaintext. Don't email them or store them online, and delete them when the import is done.
source - Step 8 · Active until the end of the current billing period · No refund for past charges or time remaining
Cancel the subscription
A team owner or someone with Manage Billing selects Cancel subscription. The account stays active to the end of the billing period, then freezes.

Leaving 1Password is simple on the billing side and fiddly on the export side. Facts below are from each company's own pages, read Oct 1, 2026.
Leaving 1Password
When you can cancel. A team owner, or anyone with the Manage Billing permission, cancels the subscription: select Cancel subscription and follow the onscreen instructions. The plan stays active until the end of the current billing period, then the account is frozen. 1Password's refund policy rules out refunds for past charges or the time left. Plans bill monthly or yearly and, under the Terms of Service, renew at the end of each billing cycle until you cancel. If a 1Password Business representative manages your subscription, ask your Account Manager about its terms.
What the export gives you. Each person exports from the 1Password 8 app: File > Export, then pick the account. There are two formats. 1PUX, the 1Password Unencrypted Export, keeps the most: its files folder holds Document items and file attachments. CSV keeps only Login and Password items and drops security questions, linked items and custom fields. Use 1PUX wherever the new manager accepts it.
The export isn't encrypted. 1Password says exported files are stored in plaintext, and anyone with the file can read your passwords. Don't email them or store them online, and delete them once the import is done.
What doesn't move easily. People who unlock with SSO can't export their data. Passkeys export only from the iOS and Android apps. A desktop export leaves them behind, and 1Password says to also create new passkeys on each website where you saved one. In 1Password 7, export goes one vault at a time, and some shared vaults may lack the "Export items" permission.
Your data after cancelling. A frozen account can still be signed into to view and export your data, as long as you don't delete the account. You can't add or edit items or fill them in the browser. That's a safety net, but finish your exports before the billing period ends anyway.
Where to go
RoboForm says importing from 1Password is "as easy as 1-2-3." Its home page says it imports from major password managers or a CSV. RoboForm's step-by-step help article showed a robot check when we read it, so the importer's details, including which 1Password format it takes, aren't covered here. Its business page mentions guided setup and dedicated onboarding engineers.
Zoho Vault has a named 1Password import. Its 1Password article accepts CSV, TXT or PUX files. But Zoho's supported-files list names only 1Password 7 TXT and 1Password 4 CSV, and the article's own upload step says CSV. We use the stricter reading: plan on CSV, which carries only Login and Password items. Only Enterprise items can be shared in Zoho Vault. Zoho's Vault page lists free migration and onboarding assistance.
Proton Pass has built-in support for importing from 1Password, including 1PUX files. Proton's import page says a move from most major password managers takes "just a few minutes." Its import pages don't mention a migration service.
Who should move, and who should wait
If your team keeps documents or attachments in 1Password, pick a destination that takes 1PUX, since CSV leaves files behind. Proton Pass says it takes 1PUX; Zoho's pages disagree with each other. If people store passkeys in 1Password, have them export from a phone and create new passkeys on each site, as 1Password advises. Billing is the easy part: there's no refund, but a cancelled plan stays active to the end of the billing period. Compare the options on our password manager ranking, see the page for agencies, and read how we score them in the methodology.
