WP Engine review: $35 a month billed monthly, and no refund window
Updated Oct 15, 2026 · scored under rubric v1
WP Engine Essential suits a WordPress site or small agency that wants managed hosting with staging and daily backups on a monthly bill: $35 a month for one site, $130 for up to 10. The catches: no refund window, and the $28 annual price has no published renewal.
WP Engine's Essential plan costs $35 a month billed monthly for one site, with no introductory rate. The $28 a month on the pricing page is first-year pricing billed annually ($336), and the annual renewal price isn't published. Essential includes daily backups, staging, a CDN and SSL, but no email, and its pages don't say it sells domains. WP Engine publishes no money-back guarantee, and its terms say fees are not refundable.

What you get on Essential
- One site, 25,000 visits a month and 10 GB of storage.
- Daily backups plus automatic and on-demand backups.
- "1-Click staging and dev. environments."
- Auto-renewing SSL and SSH access, and a global CDN "powered by Cloudflare".
- Transferable sites: "Build, design, and stage a free website and easily transfer the site to a separate account."
- Domains: its pages don't say it sells domains or includes one.
- No email: "We do not provide nameservers or email servers" (scope of support).
Catches and fine print
- The headline is a first-year price. "Starting at $28.00" is annual billing, with the footnote that first-year pricing is for new customers on Essential only and "Product renewal pricing subject to change." Its terms say renewal fees "will be at our then-current rates". We use the monthly $35, which carries no such footnote.
- No refund window. Its terms of service say fees "are not refundable except as expressly stated herein". We found no money-back guarantee on its plans, FAQ, legal or support pages.
- Extra sites. "Add an additional site for $20 (USD) per month."
- No WooCommerce plan any more. Its eCommerce plans can no longer be bought since Oct 15, 2025; any plan can create a new site "with the WooCommerce plugin already installed".
Support
The plans page lists "24/7 technical support" for Essential (source). Its scope-of-support article offers live chat, phone and tickets, but says phone "is unavailable for Lite and Startup plans" and doesn't say whether Essential has it. We count 24/7 chat only.
Who it suits
Essential suits a business or agency that wants managed WordPress with staging, daily backups and a CDN, month to month, and doesn't need email or a domain from its host. The 10-site tier at $130 a month, with transferable sites, puts WP Engine on our agencies list; WooCommerce preinstalled on Essential puts it on our WooCommerce list.
Look elsewhere if you want a money-back guarantee, a phone line you know you can call, or hosting, domain and email on one bill.
