Shopify POS review: in-person selling on Basic, and when POS Pro costs $89

Shopify POS suits shops that already sell online and want in-person sales on the same plan, with no contract. The catch: in-store inventory management, staff roles and loyalty insights sit in POS Pro, $89 a month per location.
Shopify POS is included in every Shopify plan. The entry plan, Basic, costs $39 a month or $29 a month paid yearly, with in-person card sales at 2.6% + 10¢ through Shopify Payments, about $0.88 on a $30 sale. You can cancel anytime. The cheapest card reader is $49. POS Pro, $89 a month per location, adds staff, inventory and loyalty tools.

At 2.6% + 10¢, a $30 in-person sale costs about $0.88 in fees on Basic. New sign-ups get a 3-day free trial, then $1 a month for the first 3 months, with no end date given for the offer.

What you get on Basic
- "Casual in-person selling", included in every plan, with limited staff access and simple customer profiles.
- A full-featured online store.
- Offline card payments, an optional feature you turn on. It needs a compatible reader; tap to pay on phones, swipe and manual entry don't work offline (help centre).
Catches and fine print
- Inventory management. Shopify's pages disagree. The POS pricing page lists inventory management ("Perform inventory counts, complete purchase orders, and get low stock alerts") in POS Pro, $89 a month per location. The main pricing table marks inventory management Included on Basic. We use the POS page's reading, because it is the worse one for a buyer; check before you rely on it in store.
- POS Pro. It adds unlimited staff, roles and permissions, in-store inventory management, rich customer profiles and loyalty insights, and returns at any location. On Basic yearly, POS Pro is more than three times the plan price.
- No time clock. Shopify's staff management page points to Gusto and other apps for time tracking and scheduling.
- Other fees. Manual card entry costs 3.5% + 10¢. Using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds 2% on Basic (1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced).
- Hardware. The Tap & Chip Card Reader is $49 (hardware store); the POS Terminal is $349.
- Contract. The pricing FAQ says you can "simply cancel your account"; no cancellation fee is mentioned. Plus is on a 1- or 3-year term.

Who it suits
Shopify POS suits online sellers adding a pop-up, a market stall or a small shop, who want one catalog and one bill. Look elsewhere if you need in-store inventory counts, staff timecards or loyalty without paying $89 a month per location, or if you run a restaurant: Shopify's pages state no table management, kitchen display or split checks.
