Switching from DocuSign: save your signed envelopes before you close, and what happens to templates

Updated Oct 15, 2026

The short answer

Download each signed envelope and its Certificate of Completion first; Personal can't add Retrieve, the bulk-export tool. On some plans, downgrading to Free keeps your envelopes readable, while closing the account removes access at once. Plans renew unless cancelled at least five business days before the term ends, and only annual plans bought online may be refunded, on request within 30 days. Dropbox Sign converts DocuSign templates; SignWell and PandaDoc take PDFs.

The steps

  1. Step 1 · At least 5 business days before the term ends · not stated on its pages

Check your renewal date and refund window

Plans renew for the same period unless cancelled five business days before the term ends. Annual plans bought online: refund within 30 days of activation; US monthly plans: none.

Carries over

  • Signed documents download as PDFs, with a Certificate of Completion for each envelope.
  • On plans that can downgrade to Free, envelope history stays readable after you stop paying.
  • Dropbox Sign converts DocuSign templates, so you don't recreate them by hand.
  • PandaDoc imports finished documents with a completed status.

What you lose

  • No bulk download without the Retrieve add-on, which needs Standard or higher and Windows.
  • Closing the account removes access to your agreements immediately.
  • SignWell can't read DocuSign templates and PandaDoc describes no template importer; you rebuild them.
  • US monthly plans get no refund, and annual refunds end after 30 days.

The risk in leaving DocuSign is losing access to signed envelopes, not the move itself. Order matters: download, downgrade, then close only if you must. We read DocuSign's help centre and terms, and the destinations' own help pages, on Sep 30, 2026.

Check your renewal date and refund window

Plans renew for the same period unless you cancel at least five business days before the term ends. Annual plans bought online can be refunded within 30 days of account activation; US monthly plans are not refundable. The terms describe the 30-day refund as a request DocuSign will "consider, without obligation, in good faith", so don't count on it. Plans bought through a sales representative can't be cancelled, closed or refunded during the contracted term. DocuSign's pages name no early termination fee for plans bought online.

Download signed documents and certificates

Each envelope downloads as separate files in a ZIP or as one combined PDF. The Certificate of Completion comes from the same Download menu. Bulk export uses Docusign Retrieve, a Windows app sold as an add-on to Standard and above, at under 1,500 envelopes an hour, so Personal can't use it. On a small plan, expect to download one envelope at a time.

Templates are a separate download. SignWell's guide says DocuSign saves each as a ZIP in its own JSON format, which it says isn't compatible with SignWell. Dropbox Sign's migration tool is the exception.

Downgrade to Free rather than close

Some plans can downgrade to Free. If you downgrade, you keep all your envelopes as long as the account is open and active. Once an account is closed, you lose access to saved agreements immediately. DocuSign may keep envelopes for about two years after closure for its own legal and compliance needs, but that is not a copy you can download. The Free account allows light sending, commonly up to 3 envelopes total, so treat it as an archive, not a sending plan.

Where to go

SignWell. Its own migration guide says DocuSign templates import "Not directly": you upload the PDFs and rebuild fields, signer roles and signing order. It says most templates take only a few minutes, and its support team can help; no price is given for that help. Files under 50MB in PDF, Word, PowerPoint and other formats upload. The free plan allows 1 template; Light is $10 a month billed yearly with 5 templates per sender. Prices from its pricing page, read Sep 27, 2026.

PandaDoc. Its "DocuSign to PandaDoc" article moves documents with bulk import, which uploads files as draft or completed documents. Bulk import takes PDF, Word, PowerPoint, JPG and PNG files up to 150MB each and 2,000 pages per PDF, on all plans. The article describes no DocuSign template importer; a 30-minute course covers how PandaDoc differs. Starter is $19 per user a month billed yearly. Prices from its plan comparison, read Sep 27, 2026.

Dropbox Sign. The only one of the three that converts DocuSign templates. Its migration tool converts the templates you exported, so you don't recreate them by hand. Stamp, payment, drawing and formula fields don't carry over, and CC roles need a manual fix. The tool is on Standard and Premium only, Standard is capped at 15 templates, and one transfer takes up to 50 template files. Standard is $25 per user a month billed yearly, starting at $600 a year. Prices from its pricing page, read Sep 27, 2026.

Then cancel

Cancel under Manage Your Subscription > Cancel Plan. A refund reaches a card in 5–7 business days for amounts under $1,000. Closing the account itself needs ten days' advance written notice under the terms.

Who should move now, and who should wait

Move now if you have few templates and mostly need your signed PDFs kept. Wait if you are inside an annual term bought through sales, or if you have hundreds of envelopes and no Retrieve add-on: if your plan can downgrade, a Free account keeps them readable while you download. Compare the options in our e-signature ranking and see how we score them.
